What a delight to find when I first log in the morning -- the disco-uke is perfect, and love the story you're telling here.
Matt Pierce | 2008-02-02 @ 09:08am (EST)
This is jammin, mon!
I can almost hear some metal drums!
Hand me another Mojito, mon!
I love it! Bounced my head off the monitor!
Kramer's Dog (Reggie Punk) | 2008-02-02 @ 11:11am (EST)
What Phil and Matt said.
No,
really. The story's cool. I really like the almost pathetic attempt for
sympathy. Call me a sucker, but I do sympathize with them. Great job!
Eric Sipple | 2008-02-02 @ 12:05pm (EST)
This was a blast. It has Wes Anderson soundtrack written all over it. Good work :)
isaac quatorze

this is just too much fun to not earn you a watchlist add, hahaha... ohhh man so funny and really catchy tune too.
MENBAH! | 2008-02-02 @ 12:30pm (EST)
Exuberant. The Bb in the chorus (or pre-chorus, depending on your terminology) caught me off guard in a great way. Between that and the Farfisa, this is clearly something more than rote goof-pop. Good on ya.
MJ Hibbett

That's great that is!
The Vinyl Flies | 2008-02-04 @ 01:19pm (EST)
This one. This one here. A keeper.
Scott O. Clamp | 2008-02-04 @ 07:27pm (EST)
This
is excellent! If you don't mind me saying, it reminds me a little of
the golden age (for me, anyway) of the Magnetic Fields, which I
absolutely loved. Great work! Thanks for sharing.
Swampjaw McLaughlin | 2008-02-04 @ 10:49pm (EST)
That was a kick! I certainly didn't expect the bass coming after the uke intro.
I really loved the "will you wait for me" section. Love the rhythm of
it, not sure what caught me. It might have triggered an XTC brain cell
or something; they do some similar sort of rhythm changes in their
music. Very cool.
PlushBaby
| 2008-02-06 @ 03:19pm (EST)
Gotta echo Scott's reference to Magnetic Fields - you achieve the same melodious cosyness that is present on many of their recordings. Fun and exciting, the verses are my favourite part :)
Elaine DiMasi
| 2008-02-08 @ 09:03pm (EST)
Beautiful!
I love the rhythm with which the chord changes are coming and
going, fast changes versus slow changes making up a contrast of
their own.

Fantastic! How'd you emulate those sounds?
Rachel Marie (Sons of Thunder) | 2008-02-10 @ 03:31am (EST)
I loved this song, and I really like the idea of the track destroying itself at the end.
Elaine DiMasi

This chorus made a grin spread more with every beat and I'm sure I have no idea why. Thanks nurse!
Maeflower | 2008-02-10 @ 10:09pm (EST)
This was AWESOME! I love the lyrics and the commodore-icore music is delicious.
Scott Lake | 2008-02-13 @ 06:25pm (EST)
Careful, Timbaland is going to nick this one for his next Nelly Furtado megasmash hit! Seriously, well done booty-kicking SID song!
Kiffa
| 2008-02-17 @ 06:22am (EST)
Ha!
I get ideas in the shower a lot myself. Then you start to rush through
the shower so that you don't lose any of the ideas. My ideas almost
always come to me when I'm nowhere near a pen and paper... usually when
I'm out for a walk or a drive.
I love this song! I myself am very
fond of certain sweets... but I have an affinity for plain (some would
say tasteless and boring) foods as well. I often eat my pancakes with
no syrup or butter on them, much to the incredulity of virtually
everyone who knows me. And I love the taste of baked potatoes without
butter. Yum! :) In general, my culinary philosophy is "less is more".

Heart: warmed. Love the idea of having links in the lyrics - are you going to include them in the demo?
Chriddof
| 2008-02-13 @ 04:12pm (EST)
Hooray! Another excellent one.
Was
it intentional to have two quotations from the Beatles? There's the
obvious one in the lyrics, and there's another bit which is a lot like
a small fragment of "Let It Be" (I think).
Vom Vorton | 2008-02-13 @ 06:14pm (EST)
The day in the life one was intentional, but if there's a let it be reference then that's accidental!
Kiffa
| 2008-02-17 @ 06:33am (EST)
OK, I've just downloaded this one. Vom, you hit me right where I live. I'm an animal lover, and this one just makes me feels all warm and fuzzy inside. I let out this huge "Awwwwwwww!" when I saw the bunny with all the kittens lol. I have some friends who will love this song. They're not on FAWM, but I'll have to give them the link. Great job. :)
Elaine DiMasi

If not the world's most prolific songwriter, you'll certainly be the world's cleanest lol.
I have to say... this is nothing short of pure genius. One of my favorite things I've heard here so far. Love
that chord change in the middle of the verses. I'm with Elaine... this
is one to keep, and one that truly makes me wish that FAWM user pages
had a "favorites" list.

Great song. It encapsulates the FAWM challenge very nicely.

Charlie Cheney | 2008-03-02 @ 11:01pm (EST)
You
know, this is more than just a FAWM snapshot... this happens quite
often year round for me. I have these grand plans for tomorrow, and I'm
so geeked, I stay up half the night working on it, and then when
tomorrow comes I'm wiped out.
It's perfect. Thanks!
debrandio | 2008-03-12 @ 02:19pm (EST)
okay,
you are the man, and your songs the more i listen are totally Vom

debrandio | 2008-03-12 @ 01:54pm (EST)

That really is a lovely guitar solo!
sapient network | 2008-02-26 @ 11:23am (EST)
Very Hibbetty lyrics - kinda fun to hear someone else singing them.
It's
got a really chilled sort of Jarvis Cocker feel to it, and despite the
essential misery of being found out, I couldn't help but smile...
And yes, that is one chilled lead guitar :D
PlushBaby

This song has a lovely feel, laid back and breezy. I like the Britishness of the words and the way you deliver them. JArvis did spring to mind for me too. Pretty cool song!
Timothy Bracken | 2008-02-26 @ 01:38pm (EST)
I heard this on the FAWM jukebox...love it! I see you list Magnetic Fields as an influence, good choice...love it.
Anyway, this song is really really cool. I'm trying to place the sound...the dual-vocal delivery...it's all quite awesome.

Now where the heck did I put my Rubik's Cube...?
Balance Lost | 2008-03-03 @ 07:43pm (EST)

Fantastic, I love it! I really dig the "alarm clock guitar" and the keyboard hook. Oh, and I was born on a Saturday myself, so what they say about Saturday's child is definitely not accurate lol.
Scott McBride | 2008-02-29 @ 07:34pm (EST)
Great
stuff. The keyboard and guitar at the beginning sound really
good, the whole thing sounds really good. Love those maj7
chords. Very nice.
sapient network | 2008-03-08 @ 04:25am (EST)
I've
clearly not listened to enough of your stuff Mr V... This is fantastic.
The way the high hat drives us through the bridge/chorus section while
that squeaky synth swoops away is great to hear. Yup, very well
arranged - great changes of pace. The lyrics are pin-sharp too. The
last section sits really well against the drive of the guitars. A real
keeper I think...
oddbod | 2008-02-29 @ 08:44pm (EST)
This has got some nice layers of sound on it.
The casio stuff and the guitar work well.
It's got a 80s kind of vibe to it that's cool.
Could do without that chorus on the vocal but hey..
I have a PT30 too, but haven't used it this FAWM, been using my MT65.
Vom Vorton | 2008-03-01 @ 04:52am (EST)
Yeah,
the chorus on the vocal was to represent the fact that if I ever did
anything with the song, I'd like a... chorus of people singing those
two lines :)
Cheers!
Valerie Cox | 2008-03-01 @ 09:46pm (EST)
Nice, nice, nice. I like all the casio things going on in this. One of the best CasioCore Challenge songs I've heard.
Charlie Cheney | 2008-03-02 @ 11:05pm (EST)

Roy Estel Hughes | 2008-03-01 @ 11:36pm (EST)
This
song kicks! Great vocal performance and overall song execution.
And man, the topic fits FAWM to a tee. Congrats on your 14, too, man!
Charlie Cheney | 2008-03-03 @ 11:48am (EST)
Dude, this is AWESOME!
Uke-hop
forever. What a great rhythmic combo, the vocal patter just makes the
thing shake. I'm doing the shoulder shimmy with the white man's
overbite in my chair here. This is killer.
:O)
Charlie Cheney | 2008-03-03 @ 11:51am (EST)
I love the Brooklyn/Philly dropped "T" inflection here too, especially in the not as satisfying line. Perfect.
Sacred Cadence | 2008-03-05 @ 01:03am (EST)
Charlie's
second comment just made me realize that I do that dropped "T" thing
when I speak. I was thefirst in my house not born in Brooklyn, so those
who taught me to talk put it on me. [/off topic]
I love it! Very fun beat!
NC | 2008-03-05 @ 03:59am (EST)
This is so catchy! I listened to it yesterday, and I've had the chorus stuck in my head ever since. Uke-hop is a grossly under appreciated genre.
Erin O'Brien | 2008-03-06 @ 11:47pm (EST)
Hey,
this reminded me of "Tell me what I want, what I really really want,"
but soooo much better. I too love the groove and the "xylophone." Fun!

Shameless plugs, I'm all over that! Go C64!
Evin Wolverton | 2008-02-10 @ 06:45pm (EST)
Hey Vom! Thanks for the C64 tips - I'm definitely going to put it to use someday soon. A couple years ago, Beck released a few "Guero" tracks remixed in 8-bit sound, and they were stunning. I think that's what got me salivating.
Elaine DiMasi
| 2008-02-20 @ 03:35pm (EST)
Vom,
I scrubbed "Electric Jealousy" from one end to the other trying to
figure out where I could sample it. That wall of wistful guitar
chord, I just couldn't think how to use. Maybe the robotic surveillance
system saved you from the curse .. this time ..

Kiffa
| 2008-02-27 @ 08:02pm (EST)
Hey Vom ^_^ ... thanks for your message.
I
think you can do it! If you have to, just write your lyrics and add
demos later! It's very admirable that you've been able to post a demo
for everything you've written so far, but at this point you're
battling the clock (as am I), and you could really cut yourself a break
by not worrying about the recording side of things.
Honestly,
it's very doubtful that I'll have demos for any of my as-yet-unrecorded
songs up by the end of the month. But after FAWM ends (and I maybe take
a little bit of a breather), I'll be looking at getting those
songs recorded. Perhaps we can manage to keep in touch in the
off-season!
Good luck in these last few days; I have faith that you can reach your goal! :)

Yo, a fawmer in Derby! hardcore. I don't know the Jesus Years personally though I have had banter with them. Them and the Little Explorer are 2 of my favourite bands ever, such a shame they called it quits. I'm gonna listen to your songs once I've had me breakfast.
