Quick write for the Song Fight live(ish) fight tomorrow night. I did a video version with four versions of myself playing it live which will play as part of their Sunday night stream, this is the updated version where I re-recorded the vocals so that they didn't have scratchy guitars bleeding into them, and actually stopped the drums at the end of the song, etc.

Lyrics:

I hope the next twelve months
can bring some positivity
cos the last few years
have knocked the optimism outta me
You say you want to sleep
and wake back up on January 1st
What if you open your eyes
to find that everything has got even worse?

I keep my chin up
and I won’t give in to fear
but I don’t think
we’ll have better luck next year
I clench my fists
try to make my worries disappear
but I’m not sure
we’ll have better luck next year

My life’s philosophy
has been to find the bright side
but everything’s so dark these days
it’s hard to find the right side
I’m not sure
what is on the cards
fuck this year for sure
but maybe also fuck next year twice as hard

I love the juxtaposition of optimistic first lines followed by pessimistic second lines in the chorus. This sounds great, btw. I'm looking forward to the fight tomorrow night.

I was very tempted to just leave a comment of "SAME" on this. This captures the zeitgeist perfectly and I agree with the sentiment one hundred percent. And yet the song is unashamedly peppy and upbeat (love that ending) that I find myself thinking, against my better nature, that maybe things won't turn out to be so bad when 2021 rolls around.

Yeah, right. Who am I kidding?

Bit of a weird one here. There's an ongoing thing on the Song Fight forums where you can sign up to cover a random song from the 20-year archive. I decided I'd have a go, but the song I received was instrumental apart from sampled voicemail messages, which I wasn't sure how to approach. So this is kind of a reinterpretation which I thought was fair enough to post on 50/90 - I sampled a voicemail from the garage telling me that my car wasn't ready but mostly reused melodies from the original song.

I don't think I really did the original justice - you can hear it here: http://sfjukebox.org/songs/hold_my_calls/Lonbobby [26] - but this was kinda fun all the same.

We've got an unfortunate development--words no one wants to hear. There's definitely as cool vibe here. That voicemail menu voice is weirdly compelling. I'd like to hear more of that. Maybe we should do random covers here. That could be all kinds of fun. (I think you do the original justice. It is a pretty cool song, though. And those messages from the mom are so sweet. You'll enjoy the gray sweater. You didn't really want that black one--it picks up a lot of lint. LOL)

Love this! As soon as you hear "we've got an unfortunate development," you know it's going to be one of those days, and the music reflects that sort of deflation. In fact, if Monday were a song, I'm pretty sure this would be it. Enjoyed the original song as well--not an easy to thing to cover, but you've pulled it off quite well, so kudos!

RIGHT. I've been a little quiet the last few weeks but I'm hoping to be back in for a busy September because, erm, my partner has moved to the other end of the country for work and I'm going to be desperately lonely.

This is for the latest Song Fight! prompt. They're having their 20th birthday celebrations at the moment, a good time to check out the site and enter a fight if you haven't before! http://songfight.org/ [44]

Lyrics:

you’ve got a competitive spirit
and I find it hard to say no
so when you offer a challenge
you know that I’m ready to go
but you, you’re good at everything
and me? I’m a fucking mess
let’s meet in the middle
and pretend that I was a success

because you’re up fifty points
and looking more likely to score
and I think it’s time
we called it a draw
you’re up on the podium
I’m down on the floor
take pity on me
let’s call it a draw

you’ve always known your limitations
I never learn a damn thing
as soon as you suggest a rematch
I find myself back in the ring
I’m happy to be the underdog
after all, every dog has his day
but battered and bruised, and severely confused
I suspect that is just a cliché

you’re up fifty points
and looking more likely to score
and I think it’s time
we called it a draw
you’re up on the podium
I’m down on the floor
take pity on me
let’s call it a draw

This is darkly hilarious. My wife is bopping along and laughing. I think this is the essence of our relationship: she's always been on the podium, but for some reason we've called it a draw. Everything sounds so crisp. That chorus is a catchy tour-de-force. And while it is very funny, it's also pretty damned sad, as if there's more truth there than one might like to admit. Bummer about your partner. One end of Britain to the other, that sounds like the daily commute of my sister in New Mexico

This is a morph of JUJUJUJU by @lowhum [76]: *43780 [77]

I kept the shuffle / boogie feel and some of the 12-bar blues chord sequence, but branched out in the second half of the chorus and at the end. Lyrics were written in my standard morph way, where I take the lyrics from the original song and kinda rewrite each line until some kind of... thing appears.

Verse:
A D x 2
E D
A

Chorus:
E D
E D A
F#m [78] E A D
F#m [78] E A B

Outro:
A C# D (or something like that anyway, I'm not really playing chords)

Lyrics:

every day and night
let’s tell each other stories
legends, myths and fables
and all the other categories
soliloquies and one-man plays
from page to stage
in seven days

we can’t deny our biology
our fate defined by astrology
but we can delay the inevitable
even a good thing can be terrible

I’ll play the part as written
and when you say the word I’ll
jump when you shout “action”
and clear every hurdle
short on talent, low on skill
but if you can’t help me
then no one will

there never needs to be a tomorrow
the morning only brings new sorrow
all we have is now
so I’m figuring out how
to stop the curtain falling on our show

Damn, that shuffling, rolling guitar in the beginning is so good. This is the feel-good hit of the summer, even though it's a sort of melancholy feel-good song. Let me just play it again. You've been making great music for a long time. I can't remember whether you put together big choral arrangements like this in the past. Anyway, that full choir of Voms is awesome. This is a morph of 'Goddess to No One' by @mikehex [101]: *43047 [102]

I wrote a lyric based on a tweaked version of Mike's song, and my chord sequence also took Mike's as a basis but then simplified considerably as the song developed. It ended up quite different but I think the seeds of the previous song are still clearly visible!

Lyrics:

G C
the corners of my mouth are rising
with the bedroom blind
the silence comes in waves
as though the sun has never shined
Em Bm C
on the empty seats of the stadium

there was a time that I could draw a crowd
but that is gone
the tickets stay unsold
as if the sun has never shone
and still I stand unbending like titanium

D C G
D Bm C
D C G
Em Bm
still I sing to the goddess, like I'm someone
I sing like anyone can hear
though my voice sometimes cracks
the sound that echoes back
ensures that I will never disappear

G C
and somehow my voice resonates
inside this empty room
on every empty pedestal
a thousand flowers bloom
perhaps it doesn't matter
that these songs go unheard
the empty pen is quieter
than the unspoken word

This sounds like a song written just for me, for my sensibilities anyway. (It's over...press play again.) It think it's glorious in every respect. That last verse especially is the sort of thing I love. What else is art but the making of a thousand goddam flowers bloom when you're all alone in that empty room? Transcendent chorus! The empty pen/unspoken word lines will be my (press play again) koan for the day. I'm loving the low singing you've been doing lately. This would be a standout on any Magnetic Fields albums. I bought a new synth this week (Yamaha Reface CS), because I needed cheering up and also because I realised I haven't had to put petrol in my car for four solid months so I've saved a fair amount of money. I was assigned this title by an as-yet-unknown person from the Song Fight forum as part of a title exchange thing. And here's what I wrote.

Lyrics:

you’ve got your eyeballs glued to the screen
propped up by the biggest coffee you’ve ever seen
and you won’t rest until you sort this out
your keyboard is a blur
a whirlwind where your hands once were
but each step just adds weight to your doubt

and you’d like to make a difference
but you can’t work out how
because you can’t go forward
from where you are right now

you’ve made page after page of plans
but you still end up back where you began
no matter which avenues you’ve explored
you’ve got notes on your walls
connecting string, unraveled balls
each morning, you go back to the drawing board

and you’d like to make a difference
but you can’t work out how
because you can’t go forward
from where you are right now

The shift between minor and major creates a cool effect. I like how it starts to get spooky with that theremin sound and then right back into the poppy chorus. The imagery in the first verse is especially great. Very fun tune overall, especially that catchy chorus!

Very catchy song, especially the chorus. Like others I'm hearing Britpop touchpoints. Love the synth sounds; adds a different dimension to the texture of the song.

Lyrics:

I was slightly startled
a little unnerved
I asked for nothing
but I got what I deserved
yeah, I had it coming

I was a broken robot
I was a delayed train
you knocked me over
and said start again

I was a hopeless failure
I was a little forlorn
but with your assistance
I could be reborn

This is a little Beck esque. The distorted synths create a really interesting texture for your fuzzy leads and telephone-type vocal. This is really unique sonically and it still has a really nice groove to it. Great song!

If I had done this I would have slapped a star next to it and taken the week off. It's just perfect, I think. The fuzzy bass, the drums, the cool vocals, the guitar, washy synths--all of it is great. The lyric is the best part, though. I'm not sure what it means, but it feels so sad and so true. I mean, I ask for nothing...and I have it coming.

Recently I was walking in a cemetery near my house and I saw a gravestone with this inscription: I told you this would happen. I thought that might be the best epitaph in the history of the world--and it also sounded like the title of a VV song

Big fan of that delayed second snare. Getting real MGMT vibes from this, but that's only 'cause you used a big square bass synth I suppose. The vocals seem be a little overpowering, dipping the volume of the rest of the track, but that actually kinda works as an effect, intentional or not!

Liner Notes:

Originally I was planning to write something for the current Song Fight prompt ("I Had It Coming") but ended up going in a different direction, with more paranoia and creeping dread.

Lyrics:

I wish I’d paid attention
I wish I’d raised my voice
but what with all the tension
I made the wrong choice
I bundled up my worries
and swallowed them inside
screwed up all my stories
since the facts weren’t verified

assumed all of my theories
had no basis in truth
a new limited series:
“unchecked issues from my youth”
I should have had some faith
that the shivers down my spine
were all the proof I needed
to lay things on the line

I saw it coming

it may not have mattered
I may have been ignored
I may have gotten battered
with evidence of flaws
but at least I would have said my piece
I would have felt at rest
with my fears about the future
extracted from my chest

but now I guess it is too late
I crumbled and backed down
we’re all resigned to our fate
the word has got around
if only someone had said something
when there was a chance
all I can do is scratch my head
as I did nothing in advance

though I saw it coming
I saw it coming

Vocally, a compelling cadence that borders on the hypnotic. Almost poppy in its simple rhythmic rise and fall, and its repetitiousness. Seemingly a different piece entirely to the distorted haunting (a literal ghost in the machine?) of the music track, but they lie together perfectly. I went back and listened again to give each my full scrutiny, then once to just enjoy how the two of them came together.

Appreciated the way the title hook brought everything to a slightly convulsive halt. A wham line, I feel, should be delivered with a sufficient quantity of wham, and if this degree of whamminess results in a little fallout, then this should be embraced by the piece, which it totally is.

V. V. Good, V. V.

Loved the vibe right from the beginning. Those synths and vocal effects give it a vintage creep factor, while the trip-hop beat adds a distinctive flair. I love that the scary thing described in the lyrics is the internal conflict one feels when things go ignored or unsaid. Great work!
