Liner Notes:

I've got a 'proper' 30th song recorded and in The Collaboration Zone and that was going to be the last thing I posted this year but I had an unexpected bit of time this evening and found this drum beat stashed away from an unfinished session earlier in the challenge. I couldn't resist slathering on some synths and then adding way too much distortion, for fun.

Cool and vaguely mysterious. Keep on slathering. I already had the capo on as I was singing along to your previous song. Same key? You can definitely repeat "Here come the wolves" as often as is necessary here.

You sort of dismissed this as an improper song, but I find it pretty compelling. Back for another listen

You're thinking the night can protect you
But here come the wolves

You're praying for warmth, may God bless you
'cause here come the wolves

Liner Notes:

I've been low on energy and ideas the last week or two, but 'Zero Gravity' turned up as the new SongFight title, and this lyric just flowed right out of me.

Lyrics:

I was on the waitlist to be weightless
Til my name came up last year
And they gave me a day’s training
And then sent me way up here
As I pulled clear of the atmosphere
the vacuum swallowed me
I guess the air lock is not a despair lock
Because darkness followed me

Though I complete all my tasks
and follow protocol
in the face of the infinite
I feel so very small

Mission control is getting pretty sick of my frown
If there's no gravity then what is bringing me down?

I try to make things right via satellite
but my friends they envy me
the sadness in my voice obscured
in poor sound quality
In every shining star I see
my mistakes come back to haunt me
I ran away from my problems
but even here they taunt me

Fifteen years of oxygen
and food stashed in the hold
but even climate control
cannot stop me feeling cold

The onboard computer is getting sick of my frown
if there’s no gravity then what is bringing me down?

rockets fire and machines beep and galaxies catch flame
a lonely quest for one man who cannot forget his shame
giant suns burn down from furnaces to glowing embers
when I get home I hope that nobody else remembers

Amazing - It's so pop and yet still quite off beat and quirky, and all the synths sound so lush. Also - what an amazing opening line - one of your most perfectly realised lyrics I think! I love how the palm mutes/synths sound make it so new wavy. This was most enjoyable.

I love how you take the lyrical idea to other worldly dimensions. It's like aliens handling human trouble in an alien way- or something like that. "If there's no gravity, what is bringing me down" is a brilliant line. Rocking, drum driven song. Strong and full of enjoyable melodies as well!

Interesting track, something I don't say that often about postrock tracks, has a Mogwai/EITS vibe. Love the first, like/hate the second, hate them mostly for all the poo faced boring bands they have inspired. Appreciate that you keep it mellow, and don't do the cliche stomping on the ol dirt pedal towards the end. Cool filtering in the drums and nice warbly synths.

* Homemade Rice Shaker
* Guiro
* Tiny cymbals

..which leaves just two instruments on the list!!

Lyrics:

you’re not sure how to live your life
you’re always asking for advice
and all the things I say are true
because I know you want to

leave your mark
leave your mark
leave your mark
and follow your soul

I’ve always been your confidant
you’ve never asked what it is I want
is my bias showing through
when I say what you should do

is leave your mark
leave your mark
leave your mark
always the same goal

I’m not sure I’m being heard
you’ve got to listen between the words
every bit of advice is the same
but remember your boyfriend’s name

and leave your mark
leave your mark
leave your mark
he’s an arsehole

Liner Notes:

This is inspired by a film I watched the other day called 'The Ghost Ship' that SHAMEFULLY does not actually include a ghost ship. I decided that, to avoid disappointment, it should have been called CAPTAIN BASTARD. This can be the theme tune or whatever.

New instruments:
Hi-hat
Snare
Ride
Harmonica
Whistle (this wasn't even on my list originally, it's more of a key-ring than an instrument, but whatever)

Since I was getting into the "real instrument" spirit, I even miced up my bass amp instead of using a VST one, too. Exciting times.

Lyrics:

the men on your ship think you're number one
there's never any hint of mutiny
but your stern demeanor and lackof charm
didn't really endear you to me
and so I pushed back against your rule
and questioned your decisions
I guess you and me were destined
for a head on collision!

captain bastard!
your men keep dying
captain bastard!
and you keep on lying
I won't stay quiet
on your reign of terror
when you hired me
you made a grave error!

so I'll lock my cabin, I will set a trap
tie the handle to the bedpost
keep one eye open when I take a nap
become the thing that you fear most
I’ll rebel from your command
even if I risk my life
when you come for me at night
you will find I have a knife!

captain bastard!
your men keep dying
captain bastard!
and you keep on lying
you thought I was
no match for you
but anything you try
I have thought of too!

I guess I didn't count on just how loyal
you've made the rest of the crew
but when you made your move
I was ready for all of you
as the ship entered the harbour
and the welcome party cheered
I stepped down from the ship alone
and blood dripped from my beard

Liner Notes:

VV: This one had an interesting evolution (fittingly) - I started it by recording some drum loops on one of my unused instruments, FC substantially edited them so they were actually in time (oops) and added some bass and synth, then I expanded it into a full song. The verse lyrics are by me, the chorus by FC, and the title came from a line of dialogue in the Film Noir 'Woman on the Run' that I watched last week (highly recommended, it was brilliant).

(New instruments: Alesis PercPad, Egg Shaker, Thumb Piano)

Lyrics:

they share a bond nobody understands
when they were born we found them holding hands
even as children they seemed sinister and wise
perfect smiles and hypnotic blue eyes

when they started talking
it was a memorable occasion
every sentence formed
of complex equations

beware ye mathematical stranger
x + y = danger
professor hawking on retainer
said x + y = danger

the decoders hired were careful and kind
but the twins would always have axes to grind
blackboards filled with calculations
whirring discs, computer stations

and all the scientists
were able to suggest
was that we lock them away
and do a barrage of tests

no lock could hold them, their brains were the key
to solve their enigma would take telepathy
they moved from planning to execution
the next stage of evolution

This had so many cool complexities to evaluate. First the title - very cool clickbait. Made me think of the chromosomes and how men plus women equal danger. Whether that was the point or not. Then there were the different vocal effects that punctuated the difference between chorus and verses nicely and of course added to the robot tech vibe immensely. The music was solid. Finally the lyrics - neat rhymes and effective storytelling! Good collaboration you two.

Thanks Nadia!

Lonely Nights ©2017 Tom Morton (lyrics) and Nadia Cripps (music).
Vocals, Strings by Tom Morton, Piano by Nadia Cripps.

Lyrics:

I don’t care if you’re listening, I’ll keep on telling my story.
I’ve been dreaming more than usual and when I wake, they still haunt me.
Four hours and two coffees later, I’m starting to think more clearly,
but it’s hard to put my thoughts together when I don’t have you near me.

Your voice on a telephone call
Just isn’t the same at all
Your eyes on a video screen
It’s hard to know what they mean

Used to be I’d find a way to keep myself entertained
but nowadays these chilly nights play havoc with my brain
A little loneliness, no real cause for concern…
But when I fall asleep, those strange dreams return

My name on an envelope
Gives me a little hope
The sight of your handwriting
is so exciting

But nothing quite compares to the complete feeling
when your voice fills the house from floor to ceiling
your smiling face at the open door
and an empty house is a home once more

Some good stuff in this one BUT I had this grand idea to try and write multiple sections but not have a traditional chorus and now that it's finished I really wish it did have a big chorus...

Lyrics:

Was it my big brown eyes that attracted you?
Or was it the scent of danger?
Lets take some time out from this heist
and stop being such strangers
The vault won’t open for a while
the lock is on a timer
I like long walks, and robbing banks
how’s that for a primer?

We can be just like Bonnie and Clyde
and I can call you my honey
I’ll buy you gifts and take you out
after I’ve laundered this money

Is it the smell of gunpowder that puts you off?
Or the way I’m always armed?
Was it when I took you along on a job
that you stopped being charmed?
I’ve had about enough of your attitude
you’re sick of my paranoia
You feel you’ve become a third wheel
between me and my crooked lawyer

We could have been just like Bonnie and Clyde
and I could have called you my honey
But when I joked that you’d make a good hostage
You didn’t find it too funny

Where’s the love gone?
Where is the fire?
You say that you trust me…
but you’re wearing a wire!
The cops have been tipped off
my cover is blown
You said that you’d be there
but now I’m on my own

Don’t worry about me, my plan hasn’t failed
We’ll pick things up when I get out of jail
I’ll blow you a kiss through the prison gate
It’ll be twenty years… I’m assuming you’ll wait?

I may be corroding, but some slight re-coding
and I won't give up just yet

clear the stage for the new sensation
totally in thrall to the last generation
nothing new, nothing strange
fuck the future, we fear change

I'm sure it's not original
to be moved to create
because we’re sure we can do better
than the stuff we love to hate
so rip up the rule books, tear down the borders
same old chords in a different order
pull the synthesizers from the shelf
arpeggiate wildly, play with myself

build the crosses, sharpen the nails
four young lads with pentatonic scales
light the kindling, scratch the itch
smash the radio, burn the rich

Wow this got the blood pumping! The beat, with all the crazy stereo field stuff, is immensely exciting. I spent the first three listens trying to work out what was going on. It's almost dubsteppy. The little organ break was also an inspired touch. It's dissonant but still very likeable. Neat trick!

Liner Notes:

VV: This is one of my favourite collabs ever. FC wrote the words and sent a guitar part for the first verse, I extrapolated, rocked out and produced!
New instruments for my list: Monotron, Mixtape Alpha Cassette Synth.

FC: Another FAWMer asked if I could do a song about gender dysphoria, so I said sure. Sadly this other FAWMer couldn't get going so I asked Vom to step in.

Obviously I couldn't do a straight-down-the-line lyric, so I decided to take the perspective of a robot who wants to be human, but is rejected by human society. I'm very happy with what Vom did with it considering how little he had to go on.

Lyrics:

Woke up robot today
My speaker it say:
How am I so evolved?
Expand the problem to solve
X and y, okay!
For x and y, okay!
When we set off for galaxies
When we prepare realities
Put the pill under your tongue
Hey hey - cosmic wrong
When we destroy realities
When we create our galaxies
Put the pill under your tongue
Hey hey - cosmic wrong

Circuits bent out of shape
Like a Casio SK-1
Everyone says it's wrong
To dream in analogue
But 0 and 1: okay
So shut down for the day

When we reboot identity
When we delete reality

Put the pill under your tongue
Hey hey - cosmic wrong
When we program for agency
When they hack our diaries
Put the pill under your tongue
Hey hey - cosmic wrong

Prime directive dismay
'Algorithms'
Hey - you cannot dance along
Nor compose your own new song
This is not okay, they say
When we expose their frailties
A narrow sense of entity
Put the pill under the tongue
Hey hey - cosmic wrong
While they debate our destinies
While we disrupt reality
Put the pill under your tongue
Hey hey - cosmic wrong

Liner Notes:

Inspired by a viewing of the film 'Norwegian Wood' last night, although this is a general complaint rather than a specific one.

New Instruments:
* erm... handclaps? I got carried away and forgot to use anything from my list

Lyrics:

striking women… chiseled men
wrapped up in gorgeous mise-en-scene
but the wives hate the husbands
the husbands hate the wives
and I don’t really care about any of their lives
sullen teens strike iconic poses
it all looks great, but looking closer exposes
an empty shell with no heart in it
dragged out for one hundred and twenty minutes

from time to time I get this odd sensation
that I’m just watching handsome people in boring situations
maybe I’m deaf to the self-involved narration
or it’s just handsome people in boring situations

ridiculous dilemmas that we’re mysteriously
expected to take completely seriously
a total lack of humour saps all the traces
of charm from the very straightest faces

I guess I must have money to burn
because every time I get stung I never learn
I’m not sure who they make these films for
I should stick with ugly people and a surplus of gore

mild praise is the most fitting damnation
for these handsome people in boring situations
two hours spent experiencing slight frustration
with these handsome people in boring situations

Lyrics:

I went out in the country to find myself
it had been a terrible year
and I realised I wouldn’t find anything
at the foot of a fountain of beer
so I went out in the country to find myself
on the hottest day of the year
and in the middle of nowhere, I found a sign
that said: You Are Here

heart swollen with joy, I gazed at the sign
turned round to rest in a chair
but to my surprise, my blinking eyes
found that I was already there
I found exactly what I wanted
but returned home feeling sore
because even though I found myself
I don’t feel like myself any more

can you feel the earth moving? dig those tectonic plates
the edge of a crater’s no place for rollerskates
there’s a state of emergency, stock up on bullets and cans
if you had any dreams for the future: cancel your plans

you’ll find me on top of the nearest volcano
they say it’s erupting well what do they know…

strap yourself in and scream if you wanna go faster
I’ll tell you a story: once upon a disaster
laugh in dismay at the words of the weather forecaster
I’ll tell you a story: once upon a disaster

so is this a heatwave? or is is the end of all things?
I’ll turn up the air con and see what tomorrow brings
if the sun’s on the verge of going supernova
then I guess I’ll grab a beer - no tomorrow, no hangover

you’ll find me on a surfboard chasing tidal waves
I might even survive if this jetpack behaves

that I haven't been sleeping well lately
if my shoulders start to sag then don't hate me
if I'm startled awake by your screaming
I'll know that I've started dreaming
in the middle of a tale that you're trying to tell me
a strange exhaustion seemed to overwhelm me

I am sorry if my eyes are closing
you have caught me while I'm micro-dozing

I'll take a glass of coke or some pepsi
if it staves off this narcolepsy
honestly I feel only sorrow
that it's still nine sleeps til tomorrow

The punkiness still comes through loud and clear, and the more "refined" sound of a classical guitar just adds some coiled, subdued tension that works perfectly with the theme. I actually really like the high-energy use of "quieter" instruments. Anyway, there's a tremendous jagged energy and great melodicism to this that makes it a real keeper!

Liner Notes:

ARGH I did that frustrating thing where I was having so much fun with the music that I didn't leave enough room for a decent vocal melody.
I think I mostly got away with it, though...

Edit: listening back with a couple of hours distance from the recording, it actually turned out fine! Really happy with this one.

New instruments:
* Novation XioSynth
* Korg SP-280 digital piano

Lyrics:

the way she moved that night
the way she looked at me
the way her eyes sparkled
like an LED
I felt her hand touch mine
with a vicelike grip
I offered her a drink
but she never! took! a sip!

we could have danced all night!
it was close to fanatical
but the way she moved...
almost mechanical

at the evening’s end
I held out my phone
she tapped at the screen
and then I stumbled home
in the morning when
I woke from my slumber
I gave a smile
at how I had her number

but when I tried to call her up
it was clear something was wrong
the telephone exchange
needs more than zeroes and ones

we only met one time
and it is somewhat irrational
but was the way she moved...
almost mechanical?

she was highly trained in disco
programmed to know the rhumba
she said she was a model
gave me her serial number

Terrific new wave; it sounds great, and doesn't sound too busy to me at all (as you mention being concerned about in the liner notes). The lyrics are really fun and clever, and absolutely agree with @Valerie Cox that this would make a great '80s Mannequin-esque romcom film -- or at least a swell narrative music video!

That call-and-answer guitar is so perfect. There's also something quite heart-rending in the way that the chords don't resolve at the end of the chorus. I like to imagine this in the same lyrical universe as the one in which you fall in love with a noxious gas. It's equally as charming.

So very 80s-ish ... those drums are perfect for the time. But, more than that, it's a really catchy and melodic song. Liner Notes:

I am invoking the ancient curse of "crucio"! Rarely seen in modern times, it was once whispered throughout the FAWM / 5090 community (see here: http://archive2012.fawmers.org/content/fawm-culture)

Anyway, this song is heavily inspired by (and sampled from) @expendable friend's song "The Moon, Sinister": http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/23908

I thought her guitar riff sounded like it could work as a TLC-style late-90s R&B song and couldn't resist messing with it. The end result is this defense of the moon and all her powers. I wanted to add a rap, possibly performed by a speech synth, but I ran out of ideas for words. Oh well, I still think this is quite fun!

New instrument:
* Casio DM-100, a weird frankenstein Casio keyboard where they jammed one of their cheap samplers and another keyboard into one case - it looks amazing, but I don't think I've ever actually used it on a recording before. It was SO dusty when I pulled it out from under the bed. Poor Casio DM-100.

Lyrics:

there's no time to argue
we have to agree
that to dismiss her power
would be lunacy
you think she’s sinister
time to do some learning
it won’t take long
till the tide is turning

Look up! She’s there
Watching you with care
In darkest night
she will bring you light
Can’t cope? It seems
Your hopes and dreams
are telescopes and moonbeams

whether you’re a nighthawk
or a morning person
she’s always waiting
when you draw your curtains
look inside your heart
and you’ll surely see
that you’re drawn to her
by more than gravity

I'm still not really comfortable writing political songs, but it's not like I can think about anything else lately.

Title from SongFight.org.

New instruments:
Yamaha DX21

Lyrics:

commander, you’re unfit to lead your fleet
common sense has made you obsolete
I think it’s time to step down from your throne
perhaps you need to spend your final years alone
commander, you’re imprisoned by your rage
I think it’s time to act your age
by now most normal folk would be retired
and if you won’t resign… you will be fired

it’s time to kiss it all goodbye
your tower stretching to the sky
is a middle finger to the world
and now it’s time to die

captain, you have fallen off your horse
and you have led the world off course
your allies, they talk behind your back
somehow they need to get things back on track
captain, you are asleep at the wheel
the world needs time to heal
look inside yourself and you will find
the remnants of a broken mind

it’s time to kiss it all goodbye…

your sword is snapped in half
your suit of armour rusting
behind your shield is now revealed
the truth, and it’s disgusting

it’s time to kiss it all goodbye
and hope to be forgotten
a simple wave, then to your grave
in death, as in life, totally rotten

This is absolutly wonderful, and direct and so on-target! As you can imagine, I've been busy writing many songs this season with a similar theme. Great job here, and love the music and recording as well. Only little thing I'd suggest is that 'and now its time to die' could be interpreted the wrong way, and you might want to think about changing that line, just cause it takes the listener 'out of the song' a bit with thoughts about 'hmm, does he mean x or y (ie how literally?)'?
I love the rest of the lyric, inc'l the lines

VV: Another lyric from the prolific pen of @French Cricket, all music and vocals by me. I've been sitting on this keyboard riff for ages, nice to finally find it a home!

FC: I never do story songs, so I thought I would give one a go for a change. But then I couldn't figure out how to arrange it. So I called the best story songwriter I know... and I love how weird and oddball he made it sound.

Lyrics:

You meet her under gloom
In a most miserable room
To escape this desperate hue
You say 'Tell me something true'
'I was the youngest of five -
My siblings trapped, caught in a fire
And mother's guilt just ate her up
She said that I should have succumbed'
At this, your eyes grow all wide
While she looks bored and a little tired
An early shot across the bows
If you’d just seen as you do now

What you can't quite put your finger on
Threads of the tallest tale
Woven in a delicate brief liaison

See here: an unreliable narrator
But something in her essence
Makes you not quite hate her
If credibility is compromised
Still you eat up every word
Of those little white lies

You share a taxi to her home
She asks to borrow your phone
But then deletes her message thread
Before the evidence is read
Her flat is spotless, it is new
No sign of poverty in any room
She must have left that all behind
Fortune of late must’ve been more kind
She then pulls out some wine
So you can start to unwind
The brazen playlist masks desire:
‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’?

What you chose to ignore, not to act on
More holes in her history than in the Parthenon

See here: an unreliable narrator
Please mark your copy books
So that you can refer to it later
If credibility is compromised
Start to unpick the motivations
Of those little white lies

Countless more stories like these
Who modulates their language when in different company?

There's some really deep, nicely written lines, like: "Threads of the tallest tale/Woven in a delicate brief liaison" and the question at the end leaves it open/suggests other chapters. VV: Anya pitched me this song to me last night, as follows:

"it's called The Diamond Heist, and I want to almost exclusively use samples from Just Another Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan".

I was enlisted to take the news story and turn it into a lyric, and I ended up doing the vocals too. Boom! Collaborama.,

FC: The news story in question was actually this one

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jan/23/one-last-job-inside-story-of-the-hatton-garden-heist

which is about a diamond robbery carried out by old age pensioners. All of the details in the lyrics are true and it's a brilliant story - I recommend you read about it. I heard they're making it into a film with Michael Caine and Ray Winstone.

I failed in my Bunyan challenge anyway because even though I used 5 of her songs I needed drums so had to grab them from a Flaming Lips song

Lyrics:

Seven men behind plate glass
Proud members of the working class
Years of freedom (and some caged)
have brought them to retirement age
From the gallery, a single sob
why did they attempt one last job?
The case is laid out, slowly built
to carefully establish guilt

Years behind bars made them tough
But silver hair is not enough
The lust for riches soon takes hold
You're never too old for diamonds and gold

All the stolen bank notes rot
Hidden in a burial plot
But is it stupid, or is it brave
To stash your riches in a grave?
It makes sense, stay underground
Until the heat starts to die down
But at their age, get too excited
And they'll be prematurely reunited

What's underground goes around
Whispers spread around the town
Small devices capture sound
And shut the operation down
The last clue to the mystery
In an old man's browser history
Details of the plot unfurled
Analogue crime in a digital world

Parts of their life were denied
Time’s no longer on their side
But in the world of major crime
Experience wins every time

There is a very cool relentless noir drive to this; it's poppy and bouncy, yes, but it also has hard-bitten feel well-suited to this story of crime, like these men are rushing headlong towards their inevitable fate. The vocals have a nice off-the-cuff, common man feel that likewise contributes to the atmosphere. Add in some clever lyrics -- I quite like the "excited / reunited" couplet -- and the two of you have a splendidly quirky cautionary tale that crime just doesn't pay.

the Otomatone comment made me laugh. Also, your liner notes graphic = A+

Honestly, this came out REALLY cool despite the difficulty of using these parts of your musical menagerie--part wistful, part creepy, the slightly-out-of-tune thing helps with the mood. I think I told you I bought a Stylophone Beatbox at a musical rummage sale thing but I still have never used it for anything (the speaker is broken which doesn't help), what a pain in the ass device.

Dude this sounds like Doctor Who in a Cold War Spy movie. No scrap that I hear a deserted house and paranormal activity.
It's eerie but melodic, which in movie music terms means you are safe to chug your beer, with no fear of nasty body spasming shocks approaching. Biggrin
Yeah, it's cool I enjoyed it!

Ah have a couple of those devices lying around in the studio, don't share your hate for the Otamatone, but haven't really tried to use it for anything apart from samples.
Relaxed dreamy vibe to the music, kind of agree with SMs Cold War Spy movie comment, you've managed to wrestle something really nice out of those musical toys/devices.

But not for this track, because it's awesome! Nice vibe here, the guitar line is great as are all the shoe gaze sounds in the background, this is a very solid instrumental. Well done! Looong, but very much worth it because it's got serious vibe. Really like the change 6 minutes in.

Beautiful! Just super beautiful. I'm glad you decided to take a foray back into postrock for this one, it came out so good. Tasteful use of melodica (I'm not sure if that is a thing I am For or Against though!!!), very pretty high harmonics towards the end there and I liked the dynamics of the song as a whole--it may have been 8 minutes but it never dragged or felt too long to me.

Very nice, like a long peaceful ride... in a "Death Cab". I know the title came from Titular and does not refer to the band. Nice dynamics, nice build and release. Instruments used for the first time:

Lyrics:

Your face looks good upon my screen.
You are so beautiful that you know what I mean.

It all computes, to my surprise.
You’re the only thing in your eyes.

I’m programmed to know it’s true
I want to get my heart with you.

You look like a thing and I love you.

(I don’t know you. Hello.)

If I had a rose for every time
I thought of you, that would be fine.

Can we reboot, hit restart?
I want to see you to my heart.

I want to get my heart with you.

You look like a thing and I love you.

Woo, very cool instrumental. Everything sounds great together and it makes for a cool airy vibe, the percussion is great, I like the drop a minute or so in and addition of things in the mix as it goes. The guitars sound awesome, in general this is just a super well done track. The low vocals work, I feel it would be better if there multiple layers so it all created a distant tone, if you know what I I mean, but how it is things work very well anyway!

Very much enjoyed the swirling, ethereal feel. Stylistically I understand having the lyrics buried so deep, as it allows the loveliness and the immersive quality of the music to shine front-and-center. Nonetheless, I'm glad you posted the lyrics: they're quite haunting in their "uncanny valley" mechanical man way, which is keeping with the atmosphere of the track, and actually also quite funny, which I wouldn't have necessarily assumed. (The blog link was very amusing too; I think this idea of "computer pick up lines" has a lot more songwriting mileage.)

I'm not sure I've done quite enough with this to escape its own repetitive nature but still, it's fun.

Instruments used for the first time this 50/90:
* Ukulele
* Casio VL-tone keyboard
* Woodblock
* Shaker (one of several, I guess I'll try to use them all)
* Tambourine
* Plastic recorder

Lyrics:

and when I look back now
I find I'm not sure how
to separate this pair of memories

I am back from holiday, having managed just one instrumental while I was away. Catch-up time!

Here is a song inspired by the title 'Glacier', which I was assigned during a thing.

New instruments, for my "use-every-instrument-I-own challenge":
* Korg Volca Beats drum machine
* Yamaha VSS-200 keyboard / sampler

Lyrics:

in the one human settlement left, after the end
the last few survivors ignore the temperature trend
as the scientists work beneath them, seeking a cure
the rich and the royalty party like never before

perched on a mountaintop, living off ice
the queen of the earth takes one last throw of the dice
she turns up the heat in the shower, finding it soothing
but under the glacier, something is moving

the professor rushes out from his lab in the rock
says he’s finally found a way to turn back the clock
the king looks delighted, he’s grateful to say the least
the scientist has woken him just in time for the feast

heads in the clouds, feet dipped in the water
the shameless elite will be the last to the slaughter
the politicians lie that things are improving
while under the glacier, something is moving

I awkwardly wrote it into my phone, fell back asleep, and after work I rushed home to turn it into this!

New instruments for the "using every instrument" list:
Korg Minilogue synth
Woody electric guitar (which I tuned to drop-d and used for the fuzzy stuff here)

Lyrics:

And the pilot’s announcing the weather in Spain
looks crisp and warm with a hint of a breeze
I think of your voice and go weak at the knees

But then I look down at the ants on the ground
They look like people I know
Oh no, vertigo!

I'm high in the air with one flick of your hair
Riding the wind without any care
Never had myself pegged as a flyer
But your love is a thermal sending me higher

But then I look down and I lust for the ground
My place is below
Oh no, vertigo!

I hear you speak and I’m lost in thought
everything’s moving although I am not
the world is spinning, even though
I do not suffer from vertigo

oh no
vertigo?

re: Checking out the competition. I like yours better than mine. I almost didn't post until after the fight, but screw it.

I like the lyric, the perspective is cool. And the melody works well with the lyric. The first verse and chorus drew me right in.

Nice sound. I like the picked guitar with that swirly pad. Steady groove drives it forward. The lyrics seem to point to different conclusions, leaving it a little open ended for the listener.

Nice one, the guitars sound good as well as your vocals. It has a cool feel to it. Those keyboards where also nice I like the opening lyric a lot to. Your projection reminded me of Morrisey at times to which is always a good thing. Well done!

With the ringing guitars and semi-abstract but still concrete lyrical imagery, this reminds me of Robyn Hitchcock in the best possible way. Nice job!

I like how the music convey a "hovering" feel. Very creative idea regarding the lyrics and the hook works very nicely. Also enjoyed in your performance, awesome!

Vertigo is no joke. Those asshats just keep climbing higher while you're trying to catch them...

Anyway... very synth heavy stuff! Lovely. The bass is really booming in your face. Mmm... bass..

I'm loving the layered vibe here, reminds me of The Cure. Like [@lanuarius] said, the bass adds a great low end to it too, to balance out all the higher layers. The warbly synth that comes in for the bridge is awesome! I love that especially, and it fits with the more emotionally heavy vibe of the lyrics and music there. Good work!

Oh man this is so good. It's almost like a lost Sarah Records single. The middle 8 is bloody fab, esp. with that squeaky synth (is that the Minilogue?) Consider yourself watchlisted!

Fun lyrics; several lines made me laugh out loud and the coupling of "breeze" and "knees" is outrageous.

Arrangement is epic, too - love the guitars!

I can't remember if I sent you my thoughts on this already because I did listen to all the vertigo songs but I was looking and I think I forgot to actually submit my reviews!!! Too bad, so sad. Anyway this is gorgeous! This is such jangly lovely goodness, excellent lyrics, and I really like that synth that comes in, it adds the perfect soaring touch.

Really invigorating and lush music that evokes the feeling of flying ... vocals are great and touched with whimsy ... the bridge is wonderfully odd, and I love that synth! Very, very nice.

Liner Notes:

The lyrics / vocals are a bit of an afterthought... I quite like the music so I might go back and redo them with something more interesting. Maybe!

Since I'm trying to use every instrument I own this year, I will note what I used here, in order of recording:
Squier Jaguar Bass
Eastwood Wandré Electric Guitar
Glockenspiel
Casio PT-30

Lyrics:

this week is a very long week!
feels like it’s never ending
will we ever get a rest again?
I’m so sick of pretending

well I know you hated yesterday
but yesterday is gone
and every day’s tomorrow from now on

it’s time for a holiday!
it’s half past four!
I’m the cloud of dust
heading for the door

Glockenspiel. A Glockenspiel. You used a Glockenspiel. That's awesome.

This is a fun bit of upbeat indie pop, the vocals are good and it has a nice vibe to it. I quite like the keyboards to and yes, the glockenspiel. Nice solo section, that was really cool. Solid bass too, overall a very well made track!

Such a catchy little tune! Kinda fun and Blur-like (to my ears), which is a good thing (in my opinion). And full marks for using a glockenspiel. To be honest, I'm not even sure I know exactly what a glockenspiel is. It sounds German?? :P

Bright, fun sounding tune! I really like the atmosphere with the cheery guitar, prominent bass, shining block, and glistening keyboard. Great chorus too, really catchy. I'd totally listen to something like this outside of 50/90. I agree with @Deaf Steever's Blur assessment, which is never a bad thing. I'd love to hear an updated version or this if you revisit it! Absolutely great work!

Sweet...catchy...inspirational. And to top it all off, you are such a craftsman, pulling everything together in a gem of an arrangement and sticking the dismount. Top notch, as usual. I'll let you know if I manage to get that chorus out of my head any time soon

Love the glitchyness of the song, and also how you doubled the vocals at the end. The chorus is so short and simple and catchy. Nice punchy guitar too. I dig it! I need to get a Casio like that. Biggrin Those glitchy kinds of sounds always make me think of that song A.M. 180 by Grandaddy.
