Liner Notes:

I came up with this annoying chorus on holiday a couple of weeks ago and recorded a short loop on garageband on the ipad.

Figured it would count as a song if I extended it a little bit! This also makes it the only song I've ever half-recorded in Cornwall and half in Derbyshire.

Lyrics:

Mysterious place of natural beauty
Empty can of Stella

The waves crash on the beach
but the wifi is out of reach
I can see for miles
but the clouds won't hold my files

Another silly lyric I haven't gotten around to writing music for.

I thought they'd hired Inspector Rhombus to appear at my birthday party a couple of years ago, but then he started taking his clothes off and it turned out he was just a parallelogram

spir's notes - in terms of lyrics, I added the interview bits, and the vocalesey reprise. It was highly inspiring in just the original form, and then I started to think - what if we could hear from the Inspector himself?

Lyrics:

(my guest tonight is Inspector Rhombus of Geometry City PD - welcome to the show!)
(thank you)
(so let's get right to it - what do you look for in a good police officer?)
(the number one and two qualities that I look for in a good police officer are a solid base and a measurable height, because without those two things you have just no idea what your area is)

inspector rhombus
we know you care
unlike the other cops
you're no square

inspector rhombus
our moral guide
so unbiased you have
four equal sides

(so in the late 90s I worked on this case investigating the Ray family, and the Rays just got on a plane and went forever in that direction, or would have gone forever if we hadn't caught them. And the main thing that allowed us to catch them was very quickly identifying which angles were incorrect, and which angles were right.)

Inspector rhombus
No criminal can escape
Because you’re in such
Very good shape

ohhhhhhhh inspector rhombus
you're a diamond, it's true
well, sometimes a diamond
it depends on the angle from which you're viewed

ohhh inspector rhombus

(and I have to say one more thing before I end this interview today, and that is all of us here at Geometry City swore an oath to you. and that oath is, to serve and protract)

we know you care
and you're no square
our moral guide
for equal sides

no criminal can escape
such very good shape
you're a diamond it's true
depends on the angle from which you're viewed

you're a diamond it's true
depends on the angle - the angle from which you're viewed
you're a diamond
depends on the angle from which you're viewed

Liner Notes:

I wrote these lyrics a while ago, didn't get around to writing any music, and then the webcomic Cyanide & Happiness got to the joke first: http://explosm.net/comics/4411/

I might still get something recorded, but I thought I'd just post the lyrics for now.

Lyrics:

My car came off the road, I blamed it on the weather
the ambulance crew scooped me up and put me back together
they telephoned my work and said it’d be a slow recovery
but I knew that they would not struggle to cover me

because I’m sorry to admit that I give my bosses hell
they wished they hadn’t hired a journalist who couldn’t spell

the doctors, they examined me, they filled my empty veins
they said, perhaps, that there could be an improvement to my brains

it turns out that all of my confusion
disappeared with this emergency transfusion
I was broken, but they fixed me under sedative
and now I’m typo negative!

And so, at last, I learned to spell at quite an advanced age
And when I told my story they gave me the front page

The NHS, they are the best
They made me so much better
And now I always get things right
When I arrange my letters
The HNS, they are the best
They put me back together
And now I… mostly… get things right
When I arrange my letters

Well, "typo positive" is the most common blood type, and that is why we need Spelchek and Seery to support us.
I love a good pun, and this title made me smile right off the bat. The story you created to support it is entertaining (much more so than the comic, imo). HNS, lol!

@Vom Vorton: Vocals + (occasional) Electric Guitar + (possibly overheard) cat grooming in the background with a little bell on his collar

VV: This was fun! After starting a tape and being track 2 on another, I'm glad I also got to finish one off. The lyrics came to me quite quickly, I'm not sure they make a HUGE amount of sense but I think they flow quite nicely. Good work everyone!

Lyrics:

chorus:
it's no surprise that your sycamore eyes keep spinning
and it's no shock that you block my every call
it's no surprise that your sycamore eyes keep spinning
because they keep dancing every time you fall

well I guess you have the right to ignore me
if I'm the sap who ignores your right to grieve
and though it hurts to hear you say "you bore me"
I guess I should make like a tree and leave

(chorus)

is it true that you're so hard to please?
I can't see the wood from the trees

my stubbornness seems to be the root of the problem
I won't back down though I know you're in the right
I'm too thick-skinned to alter my direction
and sadly, my bark lacks any bite

(chorus x 2)

Nice and crisp guitars, sounding almost weightless, is one of them a baritone guitar? I have never tried the monotony duo, but always imagined it being more boring than the two others. Lovely with the little omnichord strums, I'm also a sucker for songs with monotonous 808 like kick drum patterns. Very meditative and comfortable piece.

coooll! I really dug that guitar + synth plucking coming in. This is kinda a rain song.
eerie too
the monotron (I guess) has a bit of anticipation to its pulsingrhythm. another PI song.
I was kinda hoping it would go 'heavy' mid way, with distorting drums, sustained guitar chords. But now I feel glad that it didn't.

I’m a little dusty, maybe
Even a little scratched
But I clean up nicely
And my wounds can be patched

I’m dried out and pointless
But I live in hope that when
You fill me up with water
I’ll come back to life again

I’m alone and empty
And I will never learn
So if you find me on the pavement in the morning
Rinse and Return

I’d love to say I remembered
Enough to learn my lesson
But, assuming I was drunk last night
I just hope I was refreshing

I've had a pretty stressful week, full of midnight wakenings and vet trips, but on one of those up-at-2am jaunts I found this title and concept stuck in my head, and wrote most of the lyric out on my phone before falling asleep again. Now, on a somewhat less stressful weekend, please find a new song, given uptempo punk-pop life.

Lyrics:

She's only got one eye but is it asking
too much that she recognise my multitasking?
It's the source of so much frustration
she doesn't respond to my flirtation.

I work long hours, with great precision
But she fails to notice my depth of vision;
I dress up smart, but it’s all for naught
I’m always stuck in her blind spot

What the hell should I think?
When she responds to everything I say with a wink

She’s got one eye on the clock
And no time for romance
She never seems to give me
A second glance
I’d like to tell her how I feel but I don’t want to panic her
The truth is I’m in love… with my Cyclops Manager

I ask if we can have our lunch together,
she tells me not to mix business with pleasure
At least I still see her every day
But I guess she doesn’t see me the same way

What the hell should I do?
Despite my best efforts, I just drift out of view

She’s got one eye on the clock
And no time for romance
She never seems to give me
A second glance
I’d like to tell her how I feel but I don’t want to panic her
The truth is I’m in love… with my Cyclops Manager

THIS IS A MORPH SONG! Do not listen if you're in the queue for Morph 2!

I had fun with this one - I started with a sample of @helen's great electric piano, sped up from 90 to 120BPM, then layered stuff on top of it.
I started by reworking Helen's words line-by-line but a theme emerged so I rolled with it. I kept the idea of a middle section with overlapping vocal lines.

Chords...
Verse: Am G F E
Chorus: F G F E
Middle 8: F C

Lyrics:

When she had gone I felt burned out
An empty husk, consumed with doubt
The only words left in my brain
Were whispers I could not explain

A voice with no face
A shape with no name
Implored me to rise…
Rise from the flames

As if in a dream, I watched my own scene
The flickering light of a cinema screen
The liquid spilled, the fuel from the can
The snap of a match completed my plan

A voice with no face
A shape with no name
Implored me to rise…
Rise from the flames

(Just want to feel warmth again
Just want to see light)

She was in my head
And I could not resist her
But as the smoke rose
I could not hear her whispers

I really like the almost music-box sounding opening transitioning smoothly into heavy, grungy sounding rock. The smooth sustained guitars on the verse sound great, as does the electric piano (delivering a sweet melodic hook), and of course the crunchy guitars! The smoother bridge builds up with the echoing voices expressing desires and it adds a lot of tension, and I adore when it goes back to just the opening electric piano. Nice counterpoint guitar solo too, always appreciate those! Awesome work on this one!

When I write a song, I normally get the whole process done in one surge of activity. With this song, I gradually worked away at it over the course of a couple of weeks or so. Not really on purpose, that's just the way it happened. I quite like how it turned out! Thanks to @izaak for the Music of the Spheres challenge that inspired this song.

Lyrics:

The design is like an eagle
Broad wings and a strong spine
But take-off is vertical
And the engine can bend time
The crew come from around the globe
Our brightest and our best
We’re going to put their skills
To the ultimate test

The Earth is running out of steam
In one eternal drought
The thing that gave us life
Is about to wipe us out

So we will carry the light
To another constellation
We will carry the light
Out into the dark
And our ship is named
After our destination
The Aquila...
is mankind’s Ark

Our scientists scanned the night sky
Hunting near and far
Their telescopes fell on Altair
The night’s twelfth brightest star
It met all our requirements
So we loaded up the bus
It’s the Eagle, or extinction…
for all of us

Yes, this certainly has a space epic feel to it! Sweeping chord progressions and synths. I really love the precision of the guitar layer with its tasty chord voicing and tone. So much coolness in this production, was it really done on a four-track!? That would explain some of the production quality. Limitations in gear can bring about a unity in the end product. I notice something of a Richard Wright sound to the synth that I think is fitting. Floating through all that space between stars! Nice piece!

Liner Notes:

As per the Auntie-Sin challenge (http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/content/auntie-sin), this is my attempt to write a song that is the antithesis of @iveg's 'Richest Generation': http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/17395

As that song is fairly slow, in a minor key, and has lots of synthesizers, I went for a fast tempo, a major key and mostly "real" instruments.
I rewrote the words, trying to invert their meaning but still making some kind of sense.

Potentially useful information for the next step in the chain follows...

Key: G major
Tempo: 150bpm
Chords:
VERSE
G D A x 3
Bm A

CHORUS
Bm D A G

Lyrics:

I’ve been out in the sun with my rivals
In a disconnected bubble
We calmly shout, get our cameras out
old technology keeps us from trouble

I find the chaos gives me focus
Helps create a new me
I’ve thrown away everything I own
Built a new identity

Chorus:
We won’t wait for brutal violence
In the sunshine, enjoy the silence
We hate being told our parents
left us nothing when they got old

Bad kids took our lunches
Words don’t hurt, but they had stones
What we found, we consumed hungrily
Adding meat onto our bones

Solo

Chorus

Wake up, new generation!
We can build life in the wasteland
Protect our few possessions
Search for medicine, try to expand
X2

Chorus

Very cool. I enjoyed this a lot. I like how you twisted the lyrics around and got something that feels coherent and right. I like the uptempo, major vibe, and the ending. I'm starting with just reading your lyric. It seems like it's set in the more barren future, or else it's material simplification taken to such a religious extreme that the new generation must scavenge for what they can, "Adding meat onto our bones." I like how you did the inverting at the micro level, and managed a new story out of it, but one that also seems a potential likely outcome of aspects of the original story line. Is that because that's what successive generations do? Hmm...
Now I've heard the song, and I get a more uplifted feeling, and the emphasis on "we hate being told our parents left us nothing when they got old." Hadn't ever really thought about that angle and how the future generation might rise above it, not willing to be pitied. Awesome take!

I always love your style, Tom. This one, perhaps due to your anti-song restrictions, really has a live feeling to it. Driving straight eighth guitar sounds that make for an infectious groove. You see the world through this near-future-sci-fi-lens that adds a color to a lot of your music... like the opposite of those sepia-toned old photographs--- like the color of tomorrow. Very cool. "the chaos gives me focus" !! Tasty guitar solo in there too!

Lyrics:

(iveg)

Doot doot doo doot [etc]

Throw on some board shorts
Pack a cooler full of ice
Snorkel gear, a volleyball
And plenty, plenty food

Splash in the water
Wipe off sand-encrusted cheecks
The drinks are cool, the grill is hot
Party at the beach

(andygetch)

Waves splash on the Terns in the surf
Heat radiates off the sand
Green line horizon just saw the the flash
We’re not alone on this earth

Dead mollusks in the conch seashell
Shuffling on sand paper
Ice cubes melt on the palate
Nothing left to pave

Green horizon waves
Green horizon waves

---

(marvsmooth)

Green horizon waves...
(Dialogue that Martin forgot to write down after making it up on the spot).

---

(metalfoot)
Green departs in brown.
Green departs.
Green departs.

Brown gives way to white.
White's all right, in wintertime.

Winter is cold.
And I grow old,
So I am told.

Too old
Too old
Too old

---

(vom vorton)

Too old or too tired
Does it even make a difference?
I watch the stars explode and fade
Until they just blink out of existence
Too tired or too old
It doesn’t matter either way
When there’s no light, there’s only darkness
Only light, and never day

When there is darkness… there is night and never day

I was going to do a full production on this one but it's hot, and when it's hot my computer fans sound loud, and while I can work around it during the recording, I find the background whine really demotivating. So here's another four-track recording! Tape forever!

Lyrics:

I saw you at the Rock ‘n’ Roll show
You were up on stage, I was in the front row
And even when the dry ice blocked my view
I couldn’t keep my mind off you

Your voice keeps coming back to me
Maybe cos I’m playing your CD?
And every time that drum beat starts
I feel an aching in my heart!

Don’t want to make you blush
Don’t want to hold your hand
But I’ve got a crush…
On your band

Well I’ve tried to get you out of my head
Put on other bands records instead
For some reason it never feels true
I keep on coming back to you

There’s something in the way you play
I can listen to your songs all day
Do you have a vacancy on your next tour?
I can’t play solo any more

Don’t want to make you blush
I hope you understand
That I have got a crush...
on your band

Ahh, so happy to find some time to get caught up on your tunes. This is fantastic! You're putting that four-track to such good use. The tone of the piece coupled with the title really evokes a dreary rainy day with old buildings that have some grit running down the sides of them. The saturated, fluttering guitar is very pleasing to the ears. Have you ever heard of Richard Barbieri from the bands Japan and Porcupine Tree by any chance? That first synth melody really reminds me of him. Great texture. Really wonderful to hear you performing with the Minilogue.

I hadn't heard of the Microsampler until just now! I wish they were still available; I've been looking for something just like that.

I took Helen's 'Fine': http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/16211

And morphed it, as per the mighty morphin' challenge: http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/content/morphs

I kept some of the words, the shimmery acoustic vibe, some of the chords, and tried to capture the spirit of the dissonant riff in my little cowboy guitar solo in the middle.

Lyrics:

Em Bm
I can't sleep tonight
C B
I know the morning will come soon
Em Bm
I'm a rabbit in the headlights
C B
of the sun and the moon

Am D
Am I everything you wanted?
Em D C
Am I half of what you need?
Am
I can't offer you directions
D Em
with no confidence in where they would lead

G D
But maybe it’s OK
Am B
maybe it will be alright
Am
maybe things will look different
B Em
in the morning's light

Em Bm C D x 2

Could have dreamed of paradise
if I'd only closed my eyes
could have woken to find truth
if I hadn't been up all night

I'd like to offer you the world
but I only have this town
I'd to teach you to swim
but I fear that we'd both drown

But maybe it’s OK
maybe it will be alright
maybe things will look different
in the morning's light

Hee, I like the false start ^~^. Feels like more deliberate composition with the electric piano and melodies swirling around. Glad that you worked through the lack of inspiration and got a little tune out of it!

Liner Notes:

This morning, I finally got hold of a power supply for the four-track recorder I bought post-FAWM, inspired by the all-tape collaborations that were pinging around the world. This song is mostly just an attempt to refresh my memory on how to use them - this is my first four-track recording in over ten years, and I haven't used one regularly since the 90s!

Lyrics:

when you stop running the world
what else do you do?
spend all the time making sure it's still all about you
your throw out all your plans
your head is in your hands

when the cameras go off and the microphones stop recording
do you come to life?
or keep on being boring?
your friends are paid to smile
they'll be gone in a little while

Wow, I remember when I borrowed a 4-track a gazillion years ago and made my first "real" recording. Smile I still love that lo-fi sound. Very good punk-ish tune, and you perform it really well. Strong lyrics as well. Nice!!

Nothing sounds quite like guitars run a bit hot into a 4track, lovely little quirky pop tune, really like the wimpy bit crushed drum machine beat. Cool lyrics too.

Pretty sweet little indie-pop tune. You always deliver something produced and a little polished. I do miss the 4-track sometimes. Too many decisions with a DAW.

This had me swaying my head to the beat this morning. I admire the ability to play a guitar with enough precision to go along perfectly with a drum machine - I lean very heavily on DAW tricks to make it work for me when I try. Nice job!

Also, the mildly lo-fi charm is pretty wonderful. I've got a single track tape-recorder sitting at home I should eventually move out here.

video gamey. I'd never have guessed it was 4-track, just lo-fi grooviness. very cool, almost effortless.

I like it. I like the weird static beat, that's cool.

Short, and definitely sweet. It has potential to keep going, ramp up, and be obnoxious and loud and awesome by the end. If you want. It's cool the way it is too. When you can write a piece that can go many directions, you've won! Smile

I love the sound of this. I'm a timbre nut, and this has great timbre. I really enjoyed it. I like the lyrics also, though I can't help but think they're about someone in particular.

Drums and guitar do a great low-fi job together, I really like the guitar playing, it's got both a punk and a poppy vibe. Snarky lyrics well sung!

Liner Notes:

Getting started with a live jam, looped synth (Korg Minilogue) and piano. The timing's a bit off and the piano's too quiet, but I'm quite pleased with the general vibe - I'll probably be doing more of This Sort Of Thing this summer, and hopefully getting better at it as I go!

Title from the FAWM Titular tool, seemed to fit quite well to me.

Nice stuff, right up my alley, hope you do more of This Sort Of Thing. Relaxing and comfortable to listen to, and the Minilogue sounds good, I have been considering checking it out, but it's on back order in all the shops in Oslo right now.

Like that bass sound - the Minilogue I assume. Feels like an opening or closing track - has a chilled vibe, but the mix of textures gives a bit of edge that meant that it didn't quite settle into comfortable ambience; for me, that's a good thing.

Sounds great Tom. Ive been listening a lot to Eno and Harmonia and the likes and this is reminding me of all that cool German stuff from the 70s. Get in!

Not at all what I expected from the title. That first basic repeating pattern really grabbed my attention and held it throughout. Very serene.

*Every* time I see a reference to the Korg Minilogue in text I unerringly read it as "Kylie Minogue." So I was momentarily taken aback when I thought you'd found a new creative partner. Ah well, maybe next time, eh?

This is rather lovely. Just sitting here and letting it wash over me. More Of This Sort Of Thing is very much in order, sir. I will be waiting expectantly.

Great way to start! Your repeating phrases are very effective and do not fatigue. Love that this was captured live. Haven't worked up the guts to try something similar yet, but this is inspiring. I especially like that it sounds like you mic'ed a room, with the clicking of perhaps a looping pedal and that dense, saturated sound. Indeed, please do more of This Sort of Thing!

enjoyed the little guitar-keys coming in
inspired me to do the same!

not rainbowy to me

This is what I needed to hear right now (Breathe in , sigh)
